How It All Began...

So it all had to start somewhere. This is the story about how Nick became an award winning miniature painter, setting him on the road to teaching and sharing a hobby that he loves.

Nick’s Biography

I have been into model painting since the age of 11.

Being very keen to learn more about the painting side of this hobby, I joined a painting club in a hobby shop in Dundee.  In the year 1997 at the ripe age of 14, I entered my very first painting competition held by ‘From Beyond’ an independent hobby shop, based in the city of Dundee (sadly no longer around today).

This painting event was heavily sponsored by Games Workshop.  Over 150 miniatures were entered in my category ‘Young Bloods’.  It was a nervous wait, but I was announced as having won 1st place.  I was in shock, being buried alive in GW products with everyone cheering.  This is when I won my most prized possession, a painting guide book signed by my hero Mike McVey and other prominent people from Games Workshop.

This experience inspired me to enter more painting competitions, which I did with good success.  In my late thirties I had an opportunity to teach fellow hobbyists how to sharpen and develop their painting skills at a local hobby shop ‘Highlander Games’.  This is when one of my first students won a prize in his first international painting competition after some mentoring. It all paid off for both of us when he was placed 2nd.

Recently some of my work has been published in rule books.  Now in my forties I decided to expand and set up my own painting classes in a local community centre ‘Boomerang,’ based in Dundee.  I never get tired of this hobby, and it is a joy to teach fellow hobbyists and meet like-minded people.
